Most AI agents fail in production because they get stuck in infinite tool-calling loops.

Most AI agents fail in production because they get stuck in infinite tool-calling loops.

We often focus on the prompt or the LLM selection, but the real bottleneck is the orchestration logic. If your agent is allowed to loop indefinitely, your latency spikes and your API costs spiral out of control.

To solve this, stop treating your agent as a black box and implement a hard execution budget.

Map your tool-calling logic to a finite state machine rather than a simple while-loop. By defining a maximum number of steps (e.g., max_iterations=5) and using a clear "done" state, you prevent the model from hallucinating recursive dependencies.

Additionally, enforce a strict "observation" schema. If an agent performs a search and gets a 404 or an empty result set, do not let it retry the same query. Force a state transition to a fallback or a human-in-the-loop escalation.

Reliability isn't about better prompts; it's about better constraints.

How are you handling loop mitigation in your agentic workflows?
